Alexander Galant

Directors Guild of Canada

Originally trained in theatre, Alexander has built up a solid knowledge base by working in almost every technical position mentionable and, likewise, in several departments in the film and television industry, ranging from make-up FX, grip, props, art department and post-production.

Films directed by Alexander include:  The Missing Piece currently on the festival circuit and recent “Silver Remi Award” winner for ‘Suspense Thriller’ WorldFest Houston Film Festival; Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper; Moonlight Desire (a Dracula video) for which Mickey Rooney leant his voice as the character of Prof. Van Helsing;  The Jigsaw Puzzle, which has been screened at film festivals in New York, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Salem and Milan,  receiving the “Special Festival BUZZ Award” (most talked about film) from the New York International Independent Film Festival.

His more “artsy” film, First Light, has been screened in festivals all over the world, winning several awards including: the “Bronze Remi Award” from WorldFest Houston Film Festival, “Special Commendation” in the Festival of Fantastic Films (UK), “Best Music/Soundtrack” in the Toronto Online Film Festival, and Nominations for “Best Director” and “Best Technical Achievement” from the International Festival of Cinema and Technology (World Tour Film Festival).

Theatre has allowed Alexander to hone his skill at working with varying types of actors.Stage directing credits include: The Diary of Anne Frank (Toronto Premiere of the new adaptation), Love Letters, I’ll Be Back Before Midnight, and Twelve Angry People (based on the movie “12 Angry Men”) which received critical acclaim and played to a sold out run. Alexander also received the Thea Award for “Innovation”  (for incorporating Animation, Computer-Generated Effects and Film Sequences with live actors) for the stage adaptation of  The Wizard of Oz. Similarly, Alexander received the Thea Award for “Best Technical Achievement” for Into the Woods.

Alexander also directed the stage adaptation of Singin’ in the Rain which brought both of his worlds together as he not only had the challenge of bringing this classic to life in a live theatre, complete with rain across the stage, he also filmed the swashbuckling silent/early talkie films that were crucial to the plot. For this production Alexander received the 2008 Thea Award for “Outstanding Achievement” in theatre for the film work used to enhance the production.

Most recently, Alexander's 'Star Wars: Blasted Behavior' won the award for "Best International Sci-Fi Short" in the New York International Independent Film Festival - 2010
